30CrNiMo8, 1.6580, or 30CND8: tempering steel

The 30CND8 belongs to the family of low-alloy steels containing nickel, chromium, and molybdenum. It features excellent hardenability: it hardens on the surface to the desired depth while maintaining core ductility. Moreover, quenching does not make it brittle during tempering. After heat treatment or nitriding, the 30CND8 improves its wear and aging resistance.

Mechanical Properties and Heat Treatments

When quenched and tempered, this material exhibits tensile strength exceeding 1000 MPa and high yield strength, making it suitable for handling significant dynamic loads. Its strength exceeds 1560 N/mm² for small diameters. In its softened state, hardness generally does not exceed 248 HRB. The 30CrNiMo8 can also be nitrided to enhance surface hardness (up to approximately 60‑64 HRC) while maintaining good core ductility.

Applications of 30CND8

This alloy is often chosen for manufacturing parts subjected to high stress, such as crankshafts, transmission shafts, connecting rods, gears, or pump and press shafts. The automotive, aerospace, and military sectors particularly value it for its resistance to impacts, fatigue, and temperature variations. Thanks to its high hardenability, surface hardening is precisely controlled to the desired depth, ensuring robust surface strength and sufficient core ductility.

Weldability

The 30CND8 is known to be challenging to weld. Appropriate preheating is generally required, as this steel grade tends to become brittle if not properly prepared. Furthermore, implementing specific welding processes is preferred to minimize the risk of cracking.

Suitability for Extreme Environments

It is equally suitable for high-temperature contexts as well as low-temperature environments, maintaining satisfactory strength and toughness properties.
